Stonewall Cable Inc. Quietly Grows National Company in Rumney

RUMNEY, NEW HAMPSHIRE NOVEMBER 1, 2018

Matthew J. Mowry

Stonewall Cable, Inc.

Jeffrey Emery was enjoying his job as director of information systems for a large NH company when his wife, Deborah, a nurse, was thinking about a career change that would allow her to be home with their young children. “We were having trouble at work finding cabling,” he recalls. “I joked, ‘you should build cables.’ We laughed it off.” However, it soon became less of a joke and more of an idea to make money from home. Deborah began making cable assemblies and landed her husband’s employer as her first customer. “Word began to spread,” Jeffrey says, and a year later, “the house was full of cables and trucks making deliveries and UPS visiting every day.”

The couple, then in their mid-30s, had a decision to make. Did they want to grow this endeavor into a full-fledged company?

“Do we want to get to be 70 years old and ask, ‘I wonder what would happen if?’ We decided we didn’t want to ask that. I went into my office and gave notice,” Jeffrey says of the couple launching Stonewall Cable in Rumney in 1985.

That gamble paid off. The company now has 90 employees, generating millions in annual revenue, and is among the 20 fastest-growing companies on this year’s list of the Top Family-Owned Businesses in NH. Stonewall Cable produces a variety of communication cables, specializing in quick-turn manufacturing. “We don’t build thousands of anything. What we do is custom assemblies. Quality has always been at the top of the list of things that are important.” Jeffrey says, adding that it produces cables that can function in demanding environments.

Stonewall Cable was contracted to engineer and build customized cables for the da Vinci Surgical System—a surgical robot—and in the summer of 2016 its customized cable assemblies were used in Rio de Janeiro to broadcast the Olympic Games. Its data cables are also found on ships, submarines, tanks, control towers, drones, jets and planes, as Stonewall sells to nine of the top 10 U.S. government contractors. Stonewall Cable earned ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System Certification, which Jeffrey says was important to landing such clients as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon. The company is close to earning AS9100 certification, which will open up a new marketplace—aerospace—for Stonewall Cable to compete. Stonewall is now in an 18,000-square-foot facility and “bursting at the seams,” he says, adding the company plans to break ground on a new, larger facility in Rumney next spring. “We want to be around for a very long time.” And with the second generation already on board, the future looks bright.

Hospitals such as Johns Hopkins Hospital, Mass General Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, UCSF Medical Center, Stanford Hospital, Duke University Hospital, Bringham & Women's Hospital, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, NYU Langone Medical Center, and University of Michigan Hospital, to name a few, utilize Stonewall's cables made specifically for critical and precision applications. Stonewall's premium cables can also be found in top Children's hospital around the country including Children's Hospital Boston, Children's Hospital San Diego, Children's Hospital of Georgia, Cincinnati Children's Hospital, and Phoenix Children's Hospital. Stonewall is in talks with Children's Hospital at Dartmouth to offer cables for exoskeletons which will help negate the expenses to the families of children with spinal muscular atrophy.

Medical professionals have also contracted Stonewall to engineer and build customized cables for use in state of the art medical technology such as the da Vinci® Surgical System which is a precision surgical robot designed to be more precise and capable than even the world's best surgeons. The complex Surgical System, made by Intuitive Surgical, consists of advanced computers, robotic arms, specially developed software, and precision control consoles. Surgeons and hospital directors found that they were restricted to particular motions of the robotic arms and required specialty cables from Stonewall to allow more adequate movements.

In addition to the operating room, Stonewall also manufactures cables to help our soldiers stay safe on the battlefield. Communication is vital to gaining an advantage on the enemy in battle and bring our troops home safely. From the front lines to data centers, Stonewall provides a variety of data cables that can also be found on ships, submarines, tanks, control towers, drones, jets, planes, and so much more. The US Navy and their contractors utilize proprietary retro-fit adapters which allows information systems to be upgraded while maintaining existing cabling, saving months of labor and enormous costs. Recently, Stonewall Cable introduced a new top US government contractor to their client list. Stonewall now sells to 9 of the top 10 US government contractors.

Stonewall's commitment to quality ensures that our nation's defenses are equipped with the best quality communication, data, and encryption cables which will ensure performance during combat, on missions, and during training. Arming soldiers with the highest quality components is vital to the success of our military and allows our soldiers to come home safely. This is something that Stonewall takes dearly to heart.

"We're forever in debt to those that put their lives on the line to defend our nation," said a Stonewall representative, "and in return, we develop, design, and manufacture the highest quality cables which the military will put to the test in the most rugged and demanding environments. Beyond bringing soldiers home, we're proud to know that we're helping keep peace worldwide."

Closer to home, police professionals that protect our neighborhoods often use cables made by Stonewall. The FBI, US Marshals, State Police Agencies, and Local Police Departments order customized cables to use in communication devices which are used to ensure that agents and officers are armed with information promptly and reliably. Police use advanced equipment for communicating, updating and receiving records, locating suspects, dispatching, analyzing evidence, and so much more. Information, which can be life saving, can change instantly and the ability for police agencies to communicate and share data is vital to protecting our streets.

Beyond building life saving cables, Stonewall is also committed to providing computing power to help cure diseases such as AIDS, Cancer, and the Zika virus. The IBM World Community Grid distributes complex equations to computers that are networked within the grid and when volunteered computers are not being used, the CPU solves the equation and returns results to the grid where it is analyzed. Stonewall has been part of the World Community Grid since 2007 and remains in the top 3% of contributors worldwide. Without the World Community Grid, these calculations would take hundreds or thousands of years to complete. Together, organizations and individuals are teaming up to help cure life-threatening diseases.

Stonewall Cable also works with first responding contractors such as DTECH Labs which builds and provides deployable and tactical communications products for disasters such as hurricanes. For instance, in 2008, DTECH contacted Stonewall to manufacture specific cables that were needed to provide communications support for Hurricane Katrina recovery operations. It's critical for Stonewall to respond quickly and adhere to strict deadlines and guidelines to ensure that everything is done to recover from disasters. Cherokee County Electric Coop relied on Stonewall in 2015 to manufacture cables used to restore power to customers after a tornado and heavy storms ravaged the area. Stonewall has an impeccable track record for responding quickly and expediting critical orders.

Custom Cables by Stonewall Cable to be Used to Broadcast Summer Olympics

Stonewall Cable has manufactured custom cables for the purpose of broadcasting the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro in August 2016.

RUMNEY, NEW HAMPSHIRE APRIL 26, 2016

Stonewall Cable, Inc.

Stonewall Cable, Inc., the premier manufacturer of communication cables sold to government and industry, will help broadcast the Summer Olympics to millions of people throughout North America this August. Customized cable assemblies from Stonewall, located in Rumney, New Hampshire, are en route to Rio de Janeiro and will be used at broadcast booths at various venues. The Summer Olympics in Brazil will feature the best athletes from around the world, and with the pride of nations on the line, 20 – 30 million viewers a day are expected in the US alone, from the opening ceremony to the closing ceremony (August 5th - 21st).

Stonewall has manufactured and shipped customized cables that will broadcast the events to North America this August including cables with custom lengths, specialty jackets, and specialty exit angles. These cables, among other equipment, are currently being packed into shipping containers and being deployed to Brazil where production teams are already on location and ready to begin the setup process for the Olympics at several venues in and around Rio de Janeiro.

Patricia Ramberg Pihl, the Stonewall Cable customer service representative dedicated to the project, was delighted to hear that the quotes she prepared would ultimately help broadcast the events to millions of Americans. She also stated that it was a pleasure preparing quotes, orders, and working with the customers involved in the project and looks forward to building a long and prosperous relationship with the customer.

Stonewall's ability to customize cable assemblies works as an advantage for broadcasting companies that require fast, organized, and efficient setup and take-down while delivering exceptional performance and reliability. Gone are the days of ordering a 50 foot stock cable when only 26.4 feet is required. Exact lengths and exit angles allow for much easier installation and organization, while custom jacket options allow for durability in varied working environments. Custom labels, serialization, and color coding are available to help keep cables organized, sorted, and easily identifiable when setting up and breaking down broadcast locations, while deployable reels allow for much faster set up and take down in temporary locations.

The summer games in Brazil will feature over 300 events in 34 sports and most will be available to view on national television networks. In 2014, the Sochi Winter Olympics averaged 21.4 million viewers in primetime in America and in 2012, the London Summer Olympics averaged 31.1 million viewers in primetime in America. The time zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will be a positive contributing factor for ratings this summer in the US. Fans will have a better opportunity to see events live rather than on a tape delay. The broadcasting company's decision to choose Stonewall Cable to supply cables is a direct reflection of their trust in Stonewall's quality, performance, and reliability.

Stonewall Cable is thrilled to have a small part in the broadcast of the largest event in the world. In addition to the Olympics, Stonewall Cable has also provided cables that have been used in broadcasts of the NFL's Super Bowl, NBA basketball games, and NCAA basketball and football events among other live sporting events.

"It's rewarding to reflect on the pivotal roles we play in such impressive projects. Each department relies on others to operate successfully. Commitment to quality and hard work plays a huge role in the the Stonewall's mission." - Stonewall Cable Representative
